Australian Opal

The most important deposits of Opal are found in Australia, Brazil and Nevada.

No two Opals will ever be identical and they will change appearance and color based on light and the direction of viewing.

An Opal can contain as much as 30% water and although they are a 6 on the Mohs scale, great care should be taken with an Opal.

It is important not to take your Opal from hot to cold or cold to hot and it would be best to remove an opal ring before cooking or doing dishes.

The word "fire" has been used to describe the color in an Opal, but the correct term is "play of color".

A "Fire Opal" is a completely different type of Opal, and you will find examples of this type of Opal in the category: Fire Opal.
