Opals

Opals are very distinct gemstones, and no two opals will ever look exactly alike. Opal lovers will be very familiar with the play of color and how lighting and angle can dramatically change the appearance of their stone.

Opals require special care and should never be subjected to extreme hot or cold (this includes moving from one temperature to another).

Opals should never be cleaned in any jewelry cleaners or with any kind of solution. There are a few schools of thought on opal care, but not all of them apply to all opals.

NEVER soak a doublet or triplet in water, this will loosen the glue. Opals can't be harmed by water but there is much debate about whether soaking an opal actually helps. Mineral oil may be rubbed on an opal to help prevent drying out and crazing.

Due to the unique nature of opals it is just about impossible to get an accurate, untouched image. It is critical that you read the description provided to get a complete idea of the appearance of the opal.
